TSTS Science Competition
Here are the award winners from the recent TSTS Science competition.
This year’s topic for the Tasmanian Science Talent Search was ‘Food: Different by Design’. In 4H, we created a photographic essay to share our knowledge about food production, sustainable agriculture and biosecurity. We used the learning assets of thinking, researching and self-managing to sort out and make conclusions about what we know about food production in Australia. A photographic essay tells a story or creates an emotion using photos and captions. We enjoyed learning about different ways to communicate and how to present our photos in an eye-catching way. We were excited to hear that Kirilyn Hawley and Ella Dick received Merit awards for their entries, Zoey Keygan came equal third and Millie Constantine came 1st place across all Grade 3-4 Photographic Essay entries
First Place - Millie Constantine – Fruit Fly Disaster
Equal 3rd – Zoey Keygan – Ocean Outrage
Merit Award – Kirilyn Hawley – Sugar, Sugar, Sugar
Merit Award - Ella Dick – Compost and Landfill
Grade 5 and 6 chose a topic for an independent research investigation. We were scientists looking for ways to solve or improve problems in the everyday world. Some of the problems we investigated included how to reduce bacteria on surfaces, the effect of various music styles to calm people and how best to prevent erosion. We learnt a lot about the process of scientific investigations and the different ways to present our findings. We presented our work to other grades at a science expo in our JMC and some students chose to submit their work to the Tasmanian Science Talent Search. It was a pleasant surprise to see that Tilly Blake received a 1st place and Jem Stretton received a 2nd place in the Tasmanian Science Talent Search. Congratulations to all the participants for showing courage in sharing your learning with others.
