“Children aren’t born with natural skills in reading, like they are for walking and talking. They must develop new pathways in their brain to master this skill.

National and international research shows that the process of learning to read can be broken down into lots of individual skills.”

All Tasmanian teachers and support staff including teacher assistance will be completing training based on the latest evidence and research in reading, meaning consistency across Tasmanian schools. At BPS, we started this training on the Student Free Days at the beginning of the year and we aim to have finished the required modules by the end of Term 2.

We will be continually sharing information with our families throughout the year as we progress in our learning.

Home Reading:
Children learn about the importance of reading as they watch family members use reading and writing for everyday purposes. Reading with your child at home will help your child in all learning areas of school. Children see you reading and writing in everyday life – reading for pleasure, sharing a story with your child, using a recipe, making a shopping list, writing a birthday card or reading street signs. This teaches them that reading and writing are useful skills in today’s world. This week your child will be bringing home some information on how 'Home Reading' will look in your child's class. If you require any further information please contact your child's teacher.
