Gr 3 Obi visit

Local Artist Visits 3F

On Thursday, 27th June, 2019, a local artist called Mark O’Brien (Obie), visited Grade 3F. For a couple of weeks before his visit we had a go at creating our own “Obie” inspired pictures.  We each placed either a big sun or moon in our pictures.

Obie wears a cool beret with badges on it and he brought with him 2 of his big paintings.

                                        (Chelsea, Harlen, Pippa and Sienna)

We each showed Obie our own pictures we had created.  We had named our pictures and Obie tried to guess what we had called them.  Obie also answered lots of questions for us, we asked him “What were some of the inspirations for his art work?”

(Ada, Benji, Flynn, Henry, Johnty and Piper)

Obie told us that he started drawing when he was little. He said as a child everyone loves to draw.  He also said, most people stop drawing at some stage, but he said he didn’t stop – he kept on drawing. Obie gave each of us feedback about our pictures, he thought we all did a good job and he gave some of us a hand-shake.

(Jayda, Kade, Lucas, Ruby, Sam and Tilly)

‘Dogs on Rocks’ was one of the paintings Obie brought in to show us.  He also showed us ‘Reading in the Moonlight’. Obie is a professional artist who uses all different kinds of materials to paint with, he uses oil and acrylic paint, water-colours and spray paints. He makes things look 3D by layering the paint on top of itself, he then sometimes shapes it with cotton buds, tooth-picks, sponges and the end of the paint-brush. Before he left our classroom he gave each of us a little mini postcard of 1 of his paintings.

                                        (Blake, Ellie and Samantha)

We all really enjoyed our time with Obie. Thanks Obie, we had an AWESOME afternoon.

Grade 3W - Clay Work

Kyron’s nan, Jenny came in to our class to do some clay work.  It was based on a book we read in class called ‘Uno’s Garden’.  We had to make up our own creature.  I made Dr Unikitty.  It’s crossed between a doctor, cat and unicorn.

After we read the book we drew what we wanted to make.  Then we used clay to make our creations.  You had to use a mixture called slip to stick pieces of clay together.  Slip is made from clay mixed with water.  We got to use textures to make patterns on our clay.  It looked cool!  I learnt that when making it you have to be careful not to trap air in the clay or it will blow up in the kilm.  That was really hard.

Later when the clay dried out we got to paint it. Jenny took our creations home to fire them in the kilm.  The kilm gets very hot it is a little hotter than 1200°C.
