Principal's Report
This time of year gives us all a chance to reflect on the achievements in learning for the students and for us as a school. Student summary reports go home tomorrow, and as mentioned in the last newsletter, they will be without the comments, as directed by the AEU to highlight the need for more support staff and teachers to reduce our class sizes. I have been impressed with the high levels of student achievement and development within their grades, and within themselves as young people in our school community. I have also been so impressed with our Grade 6 students this year and the way they have conducted themselves as student leaders in our community. I feel strongly that every Grade 6 student is set up for success not only in High School but for life with their strong grounding from Burnie Primary School. We look forward to seeing many of you at our Celebration Assemblies on Tuesday 18th December.
Next Thursday (last day for students) we celebrate this learning with our ‘Big Day In’ where students will choose from the vast array of activities available to them. We have a splash zone on the oval with waterslide and sprinkler action, an adventure zone including bush bank play, Archery, Reptile Rescue display, and various games as well as displays from Tasmanian Ambulance Service, Tasmanian Fire Service and Tasmania Police. There will also be a chill out zone with art, craft, sensory activities, sing star, dance just to name a few. Thanks to all those parents that have offered to help. We ask for students to be dressed appropriately with shoulders covered.
We are catering for a smooth transition into the 2019 school year. Our transition day is on the second last day of term, Wednesday 19th December. Students will spend the day with their 2019 class in the classroom they will be in, and where possible, with their 2019 teacher. This will allow time for not only practical and organisational things like knowing where my bag goes at the beginning of the new school year, but also will provide a start to building those quality learning relationships that enhance learning and allow classes and teachers to hit the ground running in the 2019 school year.

We have had a number of staff changes for next year. Mr Andrew Woodard returns as Assistant Principal next year, Mr Stephen Dome continues at BPS in an AST role and PE, and Mrs Clare Smith, Mrs Cathryn Parke, Mrs Megan Naylor and Mrs Sue Smith have transferred into our school community. We would like to express our thanks and best wishes to Mrs Pietta Nicholls who will be transferring to Penguin District School, after an extended period of dedicated service to Burnie Primary School and Mrs Tameika Munday, who has won a state-wide role in the ‘Blended Learning’ curriculum team for 2019. Miss Clair Jones is transferring to Hobart and we wish her well in her new adventures. Mrs Maree McCall has accepted a transfer to Parklands High School and Mr Klay Naylor is awaiting the news of his next teaching appointment. I am certainly looking forward to our 2019 School year, to enact our school expectations of Best Effort, Positive and Safe, so that we achieve our vision of a collaborative, creative and innovative learning community.
