At Burnie Primary we are constantly seeking ways to improve our communication with you in regards to your child’s learning outcomes at school. To support this improvement we are looking to slightly alter our reporting format this year and trial a different structure for Term 1. Following the trial we will seek your feedback on which reporting format you prefer.
Our current reporting process in Term 1 is to provide a short written report on how your child has settled into school. Teachers would like to replace this written report with a first term face to face meeting between parent/carer and the teacher. We believe that this will provide a greater opportunity to discuss how your children are settling into school and their learning direction for the year. These parent/teacher conversations will be held in the last week of this term. Appointments will be available after school on the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and can be made through the SOBS app that was utilised last year. We will seek your feedback through the School Association as to which format best meets our school community needs.
We value parent input into our school community here at Burnie Primary School. The School Association and Parents & Friends groups provide ways of being involved in the running of the school. The first meeting for these groups for the year, will be on Thursday 28th March. School Association starts at 6pm and P&F at 7pm. All are welcome to both meetings! Congratulations to Emma Duncan and Brendon Hyland who are our new parent representatives on the School Association. Our sincere thanks go out to Brad Pilgrim, our outgoing President, who has contributed to the School Association and P&F for a number of years. Also thank you to Amina Keygan, our other outgoing parent representative who has also been heavily involved in School Association and P&F. We are looking forward to their continued involvement for years to come.
Our Athletics Carnival was a great whole school community activity that exemplified students trying their best. Let’s face it, athletics isn’t for everyone, but the important part was that we all participated, had a go, tried our best and had fun learning together! Thanks to those parents, carers and community members who supported students over these two days and to those who were here early to help set up the day and make it special for our kids! Yesterday, Mr Dome and I, along with parents travelled to the Penguin Athletics Centre to participate in the NWPSSA Athletics Carnival. All students selected represented Burnie Primary School with pride and distinction and gave their best effort for Burnie Primary!
This Friday 15th March, Burnie Primary School will be participating in the ‘National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence’. We have registered for the event and committed our school to continue the conversation about not just bullying but student wellbeing and behaviour. On Friday we kick off with the Day of Action, and the Student Council will be conducting a number of activities that will start the positive actions and make it part of the way we do things here at Burnie Primary School. We will also follow up during our whole school assembly on Friday at 11:30am. All parents are most welcome to join us.
A reminder to parents and carers that students are supervised here at school from 8:30am – 3:15pm. There is no supervision for students before or after this time. We have a before and after school care provider here on site at school that we encourage you to utilise, especially as we move into the cooler months.

Athletics Carnival (Prep – Grade 6)
Burnie Primary School are holding their Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th of March. This year we will be holding the 800m races on the Wednesday afternoon starting at 1:30pm for Grades 3-6. On Thursday the carnival will start at 9:30am and conclude at 2:45pm. The back-up day will be Friday 8th March.
Kinder students do not officially take part in the carnival but may visit at Recess depending on the day. Kinders will run their own mini version and let parents know when this will be happening. We will hold a race for siblings who are pre-school/kinder age. This event will occur during the recess break at approximately 10:45am. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Family members are most welcome to join us. We are unable to provide spectator seating so please bring camping chairs if you require a seat. To ensure the safety of our students, we ask that spectators remain in the designated spectator areas.
There will be limited parking in the school car-park. Please use Van Diemen’s Crescent. Also note that there is now a gate on the laneway from Burnie Primary School to Curraghmore Avenue. This gate is locked during school hours so you will be unable to walk through the lane to get to the school.
A checklist of reminders:
- Appropriate clothing and footwear for running - running in bare feet or spikes is not permitted
- T- shirt, or similar, in House colours –
CURRAGHMORE (GREEN), WYONA (BLUE), OAKLEIGH (GOLD)
- Lunch and Snacks. School bags will be taken to the oval. Canteen not available
- Plenty of water to drink, in plastic containers
- Hat and sunscreen
- Asthma puffer (if required)
- Warm clothing for cool weather
All children are expected to participate, however, if your child has a medical condition and is unable to participate they are still expected to be at school. If this is the case, please send a note to your child’s class teacher to explain the non-participation. Students are expected to remain with their house team throughout the day, unless competing in an event (track or novelty). We ask that students remain until the end of the day 2:45pm. If you need to take your child/children with you prior to the conclusion of the carnival (before 2:45pm), please see one of the staff members supervising the house areas. They will have a sheet where you can sign out your child.
The school canteen will not be available.
Burnie Primary school are making a commitment to using Seesaw as an Online Learning Journal. This will enable us to instantly share "in the moment" your child's learning success with you.
To enable this tool to be fully utilised staff will be undergoing professional development during terms 1 and 2.
Please download the App if you haven't already and talk to your teacher regarding linking to your child's class.
Please be aware that communication regarding school events will continue to be shared via the Schoolzine App.

Due to unforseen circumstances there will be no canteen on Thursday, 7th March 2019. The canteen will resume on Friday, 8th March 2019.
