Welcome back to Term 2
By showing up to school every day, your child will have the best opportunity at a bright future. It gives them every chance to be around friends, learn new things and find interests. Regular attendance is vital for student success. When students attend regularly, starting as early as kindergarten, they have an opportunity to achieve academically and thrive.
We have a lot to look forward to:
- Celebrating our special people breakfast
- Cross Country
- Science and Sound of music
- Maths Expo
- National Simultaneous Story Time
- Brixhbition and much more!

This fortnight we warmly welcome Nawal, Gabriel, Eli and Isabelle and their families to Burnie Primary School.
Mrs Christina Schleich and Ms Sharon Jarvis to our teaching team. Christina will be co-teaching on 5-6C Monday through to Wednesday and will be assisting throughout the school as an AST on Thursday and Friday. Sharon has joined us as our English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher and will be at Burnie Primary School on Mondays and Wednesdays (half day).
Did you know that celebrating student success not only makes students feel good but also significantly impacts their memory, learning, motivation and other cognitive functions? When our students receive positive feedback for something that they have done, it is essentially a signal to their brain saying, ‘do it again’.
At BPS, one way we celebrate student success is by recognising when a student shows a value in action. We do this by:
- ‘Catching’ a student showing a value in action
- Awarding this student with a values token
- Students will go into a fortnightly draw for a subway voucher which will be announced over the PA system on a Friday afternoon
- Being celebrated in our newsletter
This term, we welcome a new and long-awaited addition to our playground. We thank our P&F for contributing equal amounts of funds for our new basketball hoop. We have some very excited upcoming rising stars!
This term in grade 5/6A & 5/6B we will be learning about different types of poetry. We will also be looking at some creative writing techniques we can use to improve our writing. We began by looking at the history and structure of Haiku poetry and drafted, edited and published our own Haiku poems. We are hoping to create some poetry to enter into the upcoming Burnie Eisteddfod! Here are some examples of our Haiku poetry.

Dear Parents & Friends!
Well, we’ve kicked Term Two off with a bang! We asked and our school community delivered again, with an overwhelming amount of donations for the Mother’s Day raffle. With the number of donations received, we were able to put together 12 prizes! Photos of some of the prizes are below. We thank you for your wonderful support in this fundraiser. The P&F have donated two vouchers, a $50 gift voucher for Indigo House and a $50 gift voucher for West Park Grove Plants Plus, which have been added to individual hampers. As a thank you for supporting the business, Indigo House donated a Glasshouse diffuser to be used as a prize. Thank you to Beauty @21, a local small business, who generously donated a $50 gift voucher along with a large, scented candle to add as a prize. Included in the donations, was a heated sherpa blanket from Harvey Norman Burnie. We also thank Kmart Burnie for their generous donation of a $50 voucher that was used to purchase the bowls, baskets, and chocolates to help make up the hampers. Good luck to everyone who has entered the raffle, winners will be contacted on the day of the draw and listed in the next newsletter and on our social media platforms.
Last year the P&F raised money to help support the purchase of a combination basketball/netball hoop and during the school holidays it was installed. We are thrilled to see this project completed and see the students enjoy using it before school and during break times. If it wasn’t for our school community support of our fundraisers, and the efforts of our volunteers, projects such as this would not be possible.
Dates to remember, pop it in your calendar.
The next P&F meeting will be held Thursday 23rd May, at 6.00pm in the school staffroom.
Pizza lunch, Thursday 20th June
Triva Night, Saturday 10th August

Every year, thousands of students across Tasmania participate in the Premier's Reading Challenge. The Challenge encourages personal reading goals over 10 weeks, embracing diverse formats, including recommended books.
It’s time to get excited about the Challenge for 2024!
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is a personal challenge – not a competition. It aims to instil a love of reading in our children and young people by encouraging regular reading, while also raising community awareness about the importance of reading with children and home.
This year the Challenge will run from 17 June to 23 August.

Share your thoughts on school attendance
The Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) is undertaking a statewide consultation on school attendance. 3P Advisory is independently running the consultation. Your answers are confidential, and you won’t be identified.
This information will help us better understand any difficulties being experienced or barriers that may be in the way, and what supports are needed to help with getting to school. You can also share your thoughts about what you like or don’t like about our Every school day matters campaign.
We want to hear from students, their families, our staff and anyone in the community. Take part in an online survey, share or vote for suggestions, or join an online drop-in session via the 3P website or at www.engagetas.com.au/school-attendance-consultation . The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Every piece of feedback counts. Thanks for helping shape future DECYP initiatives, school-based engagement strategies and public awareness campaigns.
