This year marks the start of our new Burnie Primary School Strategic Plan 2021-22. Underpinning this plan has been the adoption of our Department of Education Values.
We have been working with staff and students reflecting on how we can bring these values to life here at Burnie Primary School and how they are linked to our School Expectations of:
I have been thrilled to see the number of parents and carers that have made to time to book and participate in our Parent – Teacher discussions this week. We do value the partnership we have with you in your child’s learning and having the opportunity to develop the relationship and start the conversation about learning sets us up for achievement and growth. We ask that you continue this conversation and communication throughout the year and to continue to use the SeeSaw app as a platform for communication, or as always, make an appointment with your child’s teacher at a mutually convenient time.
Another way you as Parents or Carers of students here at Burnie Primary School can contribute to our School Community is to nominate for a position on our School Association. Please consider either yourself of someone you know in our School Community to nominate for this two-year term. Details can be found in today’s newsletter.
Last week we commissioned a Tree Audit of all trees within our boundaries. Unfortunately, a number of trees on the bank of the oval have been assessed as being at risk, and as a result we have decided in the best interests of safety, to close the oval to the school and public until we can have the trees removed. Plans are also underway to remediate the bank to alleviate the significant impact the removal of these trees will have on our landscape. This may pose problems for events such as our Athletics Carnival that we may have to reschedule to a bit later in the year.
As mentioned in the last newsletter, I am due to take up a new statewide position within the Department of Education effective from March 1 to the end of the year. We expect to be able to announce who the new acting Principal for the rest of 2021 will be on Monday 22 February. As this will be my last newsletter for the year, I wish all within our School Community the best. I am grateful and fortunate to be a part of such a special school as Burnie Primary School. Thank you for demonstrating such commitment and care for your child and each other.

We wish to thank Amanda McLaren for her co-ordination of School Banking whilst her children Macey and Bryce were students at the School.
She was so dedicated that she came in on her day off so our children could have the opportunity to learn about saving. Amanda was located in the staff room and was always on hand to assist with any questions.
After 8 years of weekly visits, the Burnie Primary staff and students will miss you.
Thank you for your commitment to our School.
Mathematical Association of Tasmania
Invitation for all interested grade 5 and 6 students to participate in the Mathematical Association of Tasmania's Problem Solving Competition, Thursday 18 March
This is a challenging competition for Tasmanian students in Years 5 & 6. The competition focuses on problem solving, as well as mathematical reasoning and logical thinking. Students sit a 1.5 hour paper consisting of approximately 8 - 12 questions of increasing difficulty.
The questions are designed to elicit mathematical thinking and may require students to apply their mathematical skills to topics outside of the standard curriculum or to link different topics of mathematics together which are traditionally taught separately. Each question may require some experimentation and different approaches before a student makes significant headway.
For each question, students need to explain their reasoning and show their working (using English as well as Mathematics as necessary) to gain full marks. A correct answer with little or no working will receive few marks. Students may not be able to complete all questions fully in the time frame but they will receive a better mark if they answer some questions very well rather than many questions poorly.
Participation Certificates are awarded to all participants. Results, certificates and prizes will be announced later in the year.
Could all interested students please contact Mr Ben Johnston at school or via email ben.johnston@education.tas.gov.au to ensure entry or to look at past papers. Entry fees to this competition will be covered by the school.

We ask that you clearly label your child's uniform items (including hats) with their full name. This enables us to return your child's items back to them if they are handed in to Lost & Found. Without a name on the items they all look the same and we are unable to locate the correct owner.
