As the term draws to a close it is always worthwhile to take some time to look back at the achievements that have been made and the opportunities that are coming in the future. These achievements and opportunities, while having some similarities, will be different for everyone. Over the first 2 terms of this year the students and teachers have worked hard together to maximise learning outcomes and to support Burnie Primary in being a wonderful school.
Thankyou to everyone who attended the meetings with teachers to discuss your child’s report and learning growth. It is so important that parents and carers play a role in their child’s learning and this is also vital to a student’s understanding of the importance of education. If you were not able to attend a meeting during the set times, please reach out to your child’s class teacher to arrange a meeting.
Congratulations to all students who have been involved in sporting teams, eisteddfods and extra curricula activities throughout term 2. The manner in which you have represented your school and your community is commendable. An example of the positive representation of the school was evident yesterday when the Grade 6 Students attended a transition day at Burnie High School. The reports were that the students were engaged, involved and participated to an exemplary level.

At Burnie Primary School we are developing our teaching practice to include one of inquiry to assist our students to prepare for the 21st Century.
As the world changes and jobs of the future are evolving so to are the skills students need to become successful. To enable our students to be successful and lifelong learners we are specifically teaching Learning Assets to enable students to gain a deeper understanding and transfer their learning.
The Learning Assets are;
Communicating – We can communicate ideas confidently in different ways and for different purposes. We listen thoughtfully to what others communicate to us. We can adapt our communication style to different contexts.
Collaborating – We can work with others on shared goals, questions and challenges. We know how to be a constructive part of a team, to use different roles for different tasks and to actively listen to and respect other people’s views. We understand how our behaviour affects others.
Researching – We can formulate questions and locate and use a wide range of sources and techniques to investigate problems, interests and issues. We think critically about the information we gather, and we are careful to acknowledge our sources.
Thinking – We can think logically, creatively and reflectively. We think about how we use our thinking and have different strategies for making our thinking visible to others. We remain open-minded and know that our thinking changes as we learn.
Self-Managing – We can learn independently and can make wise decisions about our learning. We know ourselves as learners and can set and work towards personal goals. We know we can continually improve as learners.
The Learning Assets have been created by Kath Murdoch
Here is an example that the Grade One Team of Christina Cohen, Kendall Hall, Emma Constantine and Di Williams have created.
What have Prep been doing in Term 2?
In Prep this term we have been having a focus on Fairytales. We have been doing lots of STEM challenges and really enjoying being collaborators and researchers!

4H Sculptures
We read a book called Bungawitta by Emily Rodda. In the book, there was a competition to make the best sculpture out of clay. We were inspired by this idea and hosted a Burniewitta sculpture competition. Here are our creations! We had lots of fun making them.

Colours Day - Wednesday 30 June
The Student Representative Council (SRC) in line with our theme of Mental Health have been researching what can affect our Mental Health. One of the discoveries they have made is that colours play a significant role in effecting our emotions in both a positive and negative way. They have found out that Blue, Green and Pink can be calming colours, Yellow and Orange can make us feel happy and positive and White can reflect peacefulness.
On Wednesday 30 June the SRC are holding a colours day where they are encouraging students to come to school wearing the colours that can evoke positive emotions.

Australian Maths Trust - Competition
The AMC is an engaging 30-problem competition that demonstrates the importance and relevance of mathematics in students’ everyday lives; it is open to students in years 3 to 12. The competition is fully online and will be completed at school between Wednesday 4 August and Friday 6 August 2021 with Miss Alanna Smith or Miss Georgette Moore.
The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) has 25 multiple-choice questions and five questions that need whole number answers. Students may attempt as many questions as they wish. The earlier problems may use more familiar mathematics while the later problems are more difficult and intended to challenge, needing more sophisticated problem-solving skills.
If your child wishes to participate please let Mrs Ann Elliott in the front office know by the end of Term 2. The cost will be $4 per student payable at the School Office or over the phone via Eftpos.
This program has been extended to 20 July 2021
Burnie Brass Band Transition Program
We presently have 3 Burnie Primary School students (and 1 staff member) playing with City of Burnie Brass across Development and Senior Band.
Wings Wildlife Park - Junior Keeper Program
To celebrate National Science Week we are hosting a ‘Junior Keeper Experience’ workshop.
Kids! Get involved in Science Week by discovering the science behind animal care right in the heart of where it all takes place.
Join us on Saturday 14 August 2021 for a taste of what is involved in working behind the scenes at Wing’s Wildlife Park – home to the largest collection of Tasmanian wildlife in Australia.
Our Junior Keeper Experience offers the unique opportunity for children aged 6 to 14 to get hands-on and experience behind the scenes action at Wing’s Wildlife Park by engaging with wildlife and the keepers who manage them and assisting with food preparation and maintenance of wildlife enclosures.
Kicking off at 10.30am the Junior Keeper Experience will give a glimpse into the day to day duties of a wildlife keeper and include interactive learning opportunities such as food preparation and enrichment, animal feeding and cleaning animal enclosures. Tailored information sessions on some of our most interesting Australian wildlife will give plenty of opportunity for questions from inquiring minds and Junior Keepers will break for lunch during the day (lunch is included as part of this experience).
Our vision is to encourage children to improve their knowledge in wildlife conservation and awareness or even consider a career in animal management, care or captive wildlife without the need to leave the North West Coast of Tasmania.
Topic: Environment and nature
Cost: $85 per child (includes lunch, hat & sticker). Payment required at time of booking. No refunds, however bookings can be transferred if there is availability on another day.
Bookings:
The office is open between 10am and 4pm daily
