This is the last newsletter for Term 3. The saying 'time flies when you are having fun' has certainly rung true this term! Looking back through the calendar with camp, socials, Book Week, Braveheart, excursions, Fathering Project, sports days, Sports Exchange, performances, and of course, lots of learning. I can see why we are ready for the holidays!

Whilst it has been a busy term, it has also allowed our students to show that they are living our school values, Respect, Courage, Aspiration and Growth and our school’s expectations of Best Effort, Positive and Safe not only at school but in the wider school community. I hope all our students (and staff) finish the term with a well-deserved sense of achievement.  

I wish all our community a safe and relaxing holiday and look forward to a busy and rewarding Term 4.

Breakfast Club

Our kitchen renovations will be completed over the Term 3 holidays. The breakfast club will be open from Monday 18 October from 8.30am - 9.00am (Week 2) serving toast and cereal each morning for a 50c donation. We can’t wait to open and thank everyone for their patience.

Coles and Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation

The grade 3’s wrote to me in earlier in the year asking if they could establish some vegetable gardens in the courtyard. Of course, it was yes!  But we have been wondering where we would get the money from to do this. So, we are pleased to announce that we are partnering with our local Coles to help raise funds for a vegetable garden. If you would like to help support the cost of building the gardens, please head down to the Burnie Coles where you can donate. We are looking forward to working with Coles next Term.

School Satisfaction Survey

The satisfaction survey closes tomorrow, Friday 17 September. The survey only takes 10 minutes, but the feedback is used to help guide the direction of the school into the future. Your input is valued!

End of Term Assembly

We look forward to celebrating our student’s achievements at the end of term assembly and welcoming the family members of our award recipients to the assembly.

Hats

Sun hats are now required to be worn at recess and lunch.  Please label or write your child's name on the hats to ensure any lost hats can be returned to the correct owner.   We are unable to loan out any hats.

On Friday 17 September, Burnie Primary School will be holding a Pyjama Day. On this day, students will have the opportunity to wear their pyjamas to school. Pyjama Day is held to raise awareness about children in care, and to help donate money for resources, like books and clothes. We kindly ask you to bring a gold coin donation to school, which will be donated to the Pyjama Foundation.

(We ask you to not wear/bring your Oodie, as they are quite big and may be a distraction to school learning).

We cannot wait to see everybody at our Primary School Tournament this weekend and look forward to witnessing some great basketball action and lots of smiling faces!

To help the event run smoothly we would just like to remind everybody of a few very important things we need your assistance with. If people could please remember to…….

Sign in using the Check In Tas App upon arrival – QR Codes will be at all stadiums at the main entrance

• Use the hand sanitiser provided
• Ensure physical distancing – our canteen may be the best on the Coast and everyone loves our hot chips but please remember in small spaces we are required to adhere to strict capacities so please be patient with us
• Use the designated entry and exit points (see below)
• Wipe down team benches at the end of the game if you are a coach or manager
• Consider stadium capacities – to help us out please arrive 15 mins before your games and after the game consider the families who are there to watch their basketballer in the following game

And finally, if you are unwell, please stay home and rest.

Entry and exit points for each stadium as follows.

Devonport – Entry via the top northern door closest to the youth centre (in Forbes Street) and exit via the southern end of the stadium adjacent to Dribblers Clubrooms (court 1)

Youth Centre – Entry and exit via the main door in Forbes Street

Ulverstone (Flora Street) – Entry is via the automatic double doors and exit via single door – all clearly marked.

East Devonport – Map is attached showing entry and exit points which are both via the northern end of the stadium. As East Devonport is being used as a Covid-19 testing station there is no parking allowed in the carpark, parking only allowed on Caroline Street.  As this stage we are expecting rain over the weekend so when walking from the road please do so on the grass parallel to the driveway then walk along the stadium wall to the entry and exit. There will be a traffic control person stationed at the venue all day to assist with traffic flow from the Covid clinic.

There are no door fees for the tournament yet we would really appreciate it if you would support our club by purchasing a ticket in our 50/50 raffle – take home 50% of whatever the Club collects!

Order forms and money to School

by Monday 20 September @ 9.30am

Grade 4s celebrated Wattle Day on the 1^st of September. We learnt about the history of this annual celebration and different types of wattle. It helped us with our inquiry about indigenous perspectives by learning that wattle seed is used for food, wattle foliage for medicines, wattle bark for bandages and wattle wood for weapons. It was interesting to make connections with what our Aboriginal Learning Facilitator shared during our digital excursion to TMAG museum in Hobart. Wattle can be found in many countries around the world. Did you know that in 1988 wattle was declared the national floral emblem of Australia? It is found on the Coat of Arms and the Order of Australia medal. The green and gold colours worn by Australian Olympic athletes represent the colours of blooming wattle. We celebrate Wattle Day because there are approximately 1000 different species of wattle which grow in Australia. This diversity represents the many people, cultures and beliefs of Australians.

On Tuesday 7^th September, 4H joined a digital workshop with the author and illustrator Alison Lester. She was sharing her techniques for creating a picture book. The reason the workshop was held in September was to raise awareness about the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Indigenous Literacy Day is held on 1^st September. The purpose of this day is to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, stories and language.  We enjoyed learning how to sketch a character from her book, ‘The Very Noisy Baby’. Alison Lester shared many interesting ideas and reminded us to ‘never give up!’. Did you know, Alison Lester has been writing and illustrating books for nearly 60 years! We liked her positive and cheerful attitude while she was sharing her skills. Her voice was very calming. We enjoyed listening to her and are inspired to make our own books. She also encouraged us to help others by sharing our passions and talents! These are some photos of our drawings. Our classroom display also shows our postcards summarising a season.

This Term the SRC have continued to raise awareness of Mental Health and how we can help and support each other. We have been involved in the following:

• Bathrooms – We have been brightening up our bathrooms as studies have identified this space as a place student go to when feeling sad, angry, anxious, or worried. We have used some bright colours and some colourful quotes to make this a more positive space. Thanks to Bunnings for supporting us with this project.
• Green and Gold Day – The SRC and House Captains combined to run a number of different sports with each class to celebrate the Olympics.
• Sensory Baskets – The SRC used some of money the school won in a wellbeing competition to buy some equipment to create sensory baskets for each classroom. Mrs Jensen who is a Doctor of Psychology came and spoke to us about how the brain works and how our body reacts to stressful situations and some strategies as to how we can become calm again. We purchased a number of calming tools i.e. squishy balls, bubble blowing and puzzles to help students calm and regulate their emotions.
• Pyjama Day – Is a day in which we wear our Pyjamas to create awareness about children in care and developing empathy as to how this would affect them and also to raise money to support these children.

Footy Colours and Saveloys – Is a fun day to celebrate an Australian tradition of the AFL Grand Final.

If your child was born in 2017 you can enrol now for Kinder 2022 (applications are available from the school office - 6433 3655 or email burnie.primary@education.tas.gov.au).

Also, if you know of other families with a child ready for Kinder 2022, please ask them to contact the School office. They must provide proof of address to ensure they are residing in the Burnie Primary School zone area.

Once the school has received the application form and supporting documents, information on the pre-kinder sessions will be provided.

It is important that your child feels connected to the school and their class whilst they are convalescing.  If a student has been away for two consecutive days the teacher will touch base with the family on the third day.  This is a way to support your child to stay connected. This may be a phone call, or via seesaw message. If you would like support before then, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the office.

If your child is away for more than two consecutive days we ask that you provide the school with a medical certificate or statutory declaration. A statutory declaration form is available from the front office.
