This week we have had Grade 3 and 5 students participating in the Australia-wide National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy testing (NAPLAN). These tests will provide teachers, students and parents with an indication of development in aspects of Literacy and Numeracy at this point in time. Teachers are able to use this information to track individual student development and areas of improvement. This is just another piece of educational evidence that teachers use to help gain an overall rating against the English and Maths Curriculums. Teachers are currently busy moderating student work samples to assist them with making judgements for Mid Year reports. The reports this year will look different with A – E rating being replaced by a 9 point scale. Please check out the link to view the changes. https://youtu.be/T3DCqICMJUY
Grade 6 students led a message to our school community on Monday. In their capacity as Daily PE leaders, they will be recognising students that display one of our ‘Learning Assets’ – Collaboration with a ‘BPS – I am a Collaborator’ sticker. If you see one on your child, we invite you to have the conversation on what it means to be a collaborator.
As the winter weather sets in, we are lucky to have warm jackets and school beanies as part of our school uniform. As such, we encourage the use of school uniform items and not personal jackets, beanies or hoodies at school. Please also remember to label your child's items with their full name to help identify lost property.
Burnie Primary School is fortunate to have a wide variety of resources to share with students here at school. As such we ask that personal items such as sporting equipment, trading cards toys etc are kept at home and not brought to school. Your support is appreciated.
I will be on a period of leave for the next three weeks. Ms Kerryn Duncan will be our Acting Principal during this time.

Inquiry pedagogy (method of teaching)
Over the past year teachers at Burnie Primary School have been developing their knowledge of an Inquiry pedagogy (method of teaching). Inquiry is not a subject, it is however a way of teaching. Burnie Primary School want students to develop knowledge, learn skills and develop deep understandings that they can transfer from one context to another.
“In preparing students to be active students for the 21st century we must do more than provide students with information. Knowledge is insufficient. It is the skills and dispositions that students learn that will transfer across learning domains and into the future. The greatest assets we can help build in young learners are the ability to think deeply and creatively to communicate effectively in a wide range of ways, to research critically and efficiently, to collaborate with others and to manage all this with initiative, confidence and independence’
Kath Murdoch 2012
Kath Murdoch is a well renowned expert in Inquiry and works with many schools worldwide.
Our focus at Burnie Primary School has been on;
- Learning Assets – Explicitly teaching the skills of; Researcher, Thinker, Self-Manager, Collaborator and Communicator
- Learning Intentions and Success Criteria – Learning Intentions let the student know the intention of the lesson, so they are clear on the focus of their learning and Success Criteria lets the students know if they have achieved the Learning Intention
- Concepts – Conceptual understanding where students can understand ideas in a transferrable way can help students take what they learn in class and apply it across a number of different contexts
- Inquiry Model – is a guide teachers can use when introducing a new topic;
- Tuning In – Provoking curiosity and checking on students’ prior knowledge
- Finding Out – Gathering Information and critically assessing the validity of this information
- Sorting Out – Analysing, organising, comparing and reflecting upon the information
- Going Further – Working on our inquiries to find out more about specific areas of interest.
- Reflecting and Acting – Evaluating our learning and taking action.
Grades will be providing examples of Inquiry in action in the newsletter throughout the remainder of Term 2 and Term 3 starting with the Kinders in week 5.
Student Attendance - from Week 5
Going to school not only promotes academic success, but also helps build important social skills, relationships and confidence. Every COVID-safe measure is being taken, so that every student can learn in class safely.
HOWEVER, if you child is feeling unwell (tummy upsets, cold and/or flu symptoms etc) we ask you to keep your child home.
It is important that your child feels connected to the school and their class whilst they are convalescing. If a student has been away for two consecutive days the teacher will touch base with the family on the third day. This is a way to support your child to stay connected. This may be a phone call, or via seesaw message. If you would like support before then, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the office.
If your child is away for more than two consecutive days we ask that you provide the school with a medical certificate or statutory declaration. A statutory declaration form is attached or can be made available from the front office.
- There are several options available to parents to explain children’s absences:
contact the school by phone – 6433 3655 - If your child is absent from school for any unknown reason, an SMS will be sent to your mobile. A response to this text is another option to explain the absence.
- Burnie Primary SZapp 'Absentee'
For the safety of our students, staff and visitors, please ensure you reverse park when using the School carpark and be mindful when opening car doors when in close proximity to other cars in the parking bays.
Please use the pedestrian crossing when moving through the carpark.
