Dear Families, Students and Friends
I am excited to announce that I will be continuing in the role as Principal at Burnie Primary School through to the end of Term 3. I am looking forward to progressing the important work our team have commenced throughout the first part of the year. Some of the events we have planned for Term 3 include National Science Week Open School, Book Week Celebrations, Community Connections, Early years water orientation and of course our most important work - ‘Learning’.
It was a privilege to welcome families to our school for learning conversations last week. We had many families take us up on the opportunity to enjoy a warm drink and biscuit in our Makers Space while waiting to see their child/rens teacher. If you were unable to meet with your child's teacher over recent weeks, please don’t hesitate to make an appointment for a catch up prior to the end of term.
I wish to also thank our incredible teaching staff for their dedication and commitment to all learners and families.
Winter has certainly arrived!
With the colder weather upon us, we encourage students to dress accordingly. This means that students can wear extra layers outside. During these cooler months students may wear jackets such as a puffer, beanies (school or dark blue), or gloves outside. If your child feels the cold and requires a neck covering, they may wear a neck warmer; for safety reasons we ask that scarves are not worn. We have heating in all classrooms and ensure that learning environments are kept at an ideal temperature during these colder months; therefore, we ask that when inside all beanies, puffer/outdoor jackets and gloves are removed.
Winter Wellness
The cooler months bring colds, the flu, COVID-19 and other illnesses. Being prepared is the best way to protect yourself and your family.
Prepare
Children are most likely to catch and spread the flu. Make sure your child has received their annual flu vaccine as this will boost their immunity against common flu strains. It will also help stop them getting very sick.
Plan
If your child is at higher risk of becoming very sick from the flu, COVID-19 or other respiratory illnesses, make a plan with your healthcare provider for when your child becomes sick.
Protect
Protect others by keeping your child home if they are unwell, encouraging regular hand washing, and covering coughs and sneezes.
For more information, read the parent and carer factsheet in the newsletter or visit the Department of Health website.
Thanks for doing your part to keep our school community safe, healthy and learning.
Stay at Home if Unwell
Protect others by keeping your child home if they are unwell. This includes if they have any cold or flu-like symptoms.
If you’re concerned about your child’s symptoms:
- Contact your usual GP/medical practitioner
- Call HealthDirect to speak to a Registered Nurse 24/7 on 1800 022 222. They can provide advice when you are not sure what to do and may arrange for a call back from a GP.
- Visit www.tasafterhours.com to find medical options near you available on evenings, weekends and public holidays, including afterhours GPs, walk-in clinics and pharmacies.

Take care everyone, enjoy a restful and relaxing two-week break; we look forward to Term 3 starting for all students on Tuesday 25th of July. Our staff will commence Term 3 on Monday 24th of July as this is a designated Staff Professional Learning Day.
Thanks for doing your part to keep our school community safe, healthy and learning.

What’s happening in Prep, Term 2.
This term in Prep we have been focusing on Fairy Tales. We had a lot of fun reading, responding to and writing about many fairy tales. In maths we have been learning about measurement and in science our focus has been on materials. We have been able to combine these together to do some terrific inquiring, including making houses strong enough that the Big Bad Wolf can’t blow over, bridges that can hold a goat, and some collages made from different materials.
18 members of our 21 strong Eisteddfod Choir were able to participate in the 55th Burnie City Eisteddfod on Wednesday. All members of our choir have shown great dedication throughout Term 2 in giving up their Thursday lunchtimes to attend rehearsals. It is always a pleasure to work with those students involved in Eisteddfod Choir each year and to see the wonderful way they represent Burnie Primary with pride, courage and respect. Thank you to the families that were able to attend and watch our choir perform. Thank you also to Mrs Amanda McCall who accompanied our choir on their excursion to the Eisteddfod. Finally, thank you to all the members of our choir (including those unable to be with us today) who show such joy and care when singing together.
Mrs Kathleen Matthews (Music Teacher)
On the 28th of June, the Grades 3-6 Burnie Primary School Choir participated in the Burnie Eisteddfod along with other schools of the North West region. We performed the songs When I Grow Up from Matilda: The Musical and Rain by Peter Combe. We were in the first section and competed against Leighlands, Stella, Cooee and Yolla. The Eisteddfod was held in the theatre, while the students sat underneath the stage. All the students displayed the values of Courage and Respect. We congratulate all the students that participated in the Burnie Eisteddfod in 2023

Grade 5 attended a digital excursion with the University of Tasmania Alive for Kids program.
It featured Lucy Christopher an award-winning young adult and children’s author from the University of Tasmania and Reading Champion for the Tasmanian Premier's Reading Challenge.
Grade 5 learnt about Lucy’s writing processes, how nature influences her writing and how reading can help you become kinder and more empathetic.
We were able to ask some questions about Lucy’s writing process.
‘I thought it was interesting that the Premier’s Reading Challenge will continue to go through the holidays and I liked hearing from an author on the live stream.' Eva
‘I have all these books. I am excited to read some for the challenge.’ London
‘We were able to ask Lucy questions. We asked about her inspiration for writing.’ Samuel
We recently held a Brixhibition exhibition as part of the wider Tasmanian competition. The students created some amazing sculptures using lego and we had around 70 participants. There were 4 categories for students to enter; Kinder to Prep, Grades 1 to 2, Grades 3 to 4, Grades 5 to 6. There was an individual winner in each category with an overall winner announced. The overall winner receives an invite from The Brixhibition organisers to display their design in the exhibition being held at Ulverstone.
The overall winner and category winners are:
Kinder to Prep - Maddix (The Castle)
Grade 1 to 2 - Lenny (Mermaids Tail)
Grade 3 to 4 - Leo (The Zookeeper)
Grade 5 to 6 - Oscar (Deep History)
Overall Winner - Leo
Well done to everyone who entered the Brixhibition Exhibition.
Tennis Tasmania
During weeks eight and nine students in grade 4, 5 and 6 engaged in tennis clinics. Students learnt tennis skills through minor games and activities, as well as rules and scoring. It was great to see students engagement in the sessions as well as their improvement in skills and knowledge of the sport. We hope that some students will attend the sessions being offered in the school holidays at the Burnie Tennis Club. We would like to thank Simon, Phoebe and Georgia from Tennis Tasmania for their work with our students.
AFL Tasmania
During weeks ten and eleven students from Prep to Grade 6 have been engaging in AFL clinics. Students have been participating in games and skill development drills to learn how to hand ball and kick a football. It has been very rewarding to see our students engaging in a different sport, with students gaining more confidence when performing the two mains skills used in AFL. We would like to thank Jack Anders for his work with our students
Dear Parents and Friends,
Another term is almost over and we have a busy last week ahead. It all kicks off this Friday morning with our second Milo morning for the year. Warm milo will be served to students in the JMC between 8.30 – 8.55am, an initiative supported and run by the P&F.
Sunday 2nd July sees the P&F return to Bunnings to run the sausage sizzle. If you are out and about, returning home from Auskick or picking up some DIY bits and pieces or another plant from Bunnings, be sure to stop by and grab a snag, your support would be greatly appreciated.
Sushi lunch is happening on the last day of term. This is not a fundraiser, just an alternative lunch option for students. This is a trial and hopefully well supported so to be run in the future. Order forms are due back to the office with full payment this Friday, 30th June.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support with the recent Pie Drive fundraiser. This year it was noted that orders had increased from last year, so thank you! Please remember that pies will be distributed Monday 3rd July to students, and collection can be made from the JMC for those who chose this option.
Funds raised from our fundraisers will soon be distributed to each class, to be spent on resources, learning tools and items to make learning fun. You will start to see pictures of purchases in next terms newsletters.
Dates to note
- Milo Morning Friday 30th June 8.30 – 8.55am
- Sushi lunch orders due Friday 30th June
- Bunnings Sausage Sizzle 2nd July
- Pie Drive distribution/collection 3rd July
- Sushi Lunch Friday 7th July
Another way to see what events are happening or coming up, is to check the P&F noticeboard, found directly across from the main office, above the lost property basket. It is currently a work in progress, and we are happy for all suggestions.
Our next meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday 25th July, to be held in the school staff room. We welcome and encourage new members.
Stay safe and enjoy the school holidays.
