Congratulations to the students who represented Burnie Primary at the inter-school Cross Country in Ulverstone last week. Not only did we win the Division A schools section, but all students upheld our school Expectation of Best Effort and our School Value, Respect. All students should feel extremely proud! Results and pictures are further on in the newsletter.
Grade 5/6 Toilet Make-Over
The SRC and Bunnings have been working together on a project to make toilets a safe space for students to go, both mentally and emotionally. The SRC recognised that toilets are a place that people may go to when they are feeling upset or worried and wanted to put inspirational words and quotes to help support their peers. We have the first stage completed, a repaint! Stay tuned for more pictures when the next stage is complete. A huge thank you to Michelle, Mickey and Lee from Bunnings Burnie and Devonport for painting our toilets!

Grade 5SH read the book, The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. They then wrote a description about the character by trying to encapsulate their attitude and emotions as well as their appearance.
On Wednesday, 2 June a group of 20 Burnie Primary students travelled to the Ulverstone Football Ground to participate in the Inter Primary Cross Country. This was an event where primary schools from the North West Coast came together to compete in running.
Due to COVID-19 the event was split up into 2 sections. Grade 3 and 4s in the morning and Grade 5 and 6s in the afternoon. The grade 3 and 4s departed Burnie Primary at 9:15am, with Mrs Fidler, to arrive in time for the Grade 4 boys' race. The boys did an excellent job as did the Grade 4 girls. The Grade 3 events were very exciting also. Both Grades did an excellent job, and after everyone’s great run, Burnie Primary was sitting in second position to Penguin Districts School in Division A.
The grade 5 and 6 runners left with Mrs Cunningham at 11.15am for the afternoon session. First up were the Grade 5 Boys who did exceptionally well leading up to the Grade 5 Girls who also did great. The Grade 6 Boys ran a fantastic race, leaving the Grade 6 Girls to finish it off strongly for the day. Everyone was a great sport and was very encouraging to one another.
Burnie Primary were getting very nervous and excited about the team results. It was down to the last 3 schools, we were very happy with our effort of being top 3, but we were still in the running for first place. When third and second were called out and it wasn’t us, we knew we had won. We were all extremely proud and happy of our efforts and came back to school with big smiles on our faces.
The whole of the Burnie Primary had a great team effort. There were also some great individual results, where the following students finished in the Top 10 in their respective Grade groups:
- Grade 3 Boys- 1st Sashan S, 5th Louis S;
- Grade 3 girls- 10th Lucy R;
- Grade 4 girls – 1st Indigo N;
- Grade 6 boys- 4th Nash A, 9th Joshua B;
- Grade 6 girls- 3rd Amarli P;

Student Representative Council (SRC) Report
This year, the SRC have been focusing on Mental Health. Last term, we held an Anxiety Awareness day and this term we have organised with Bunnings to have our Grade 5 and 6 toilets repainted in more positive colours. The purpose of this was that we discovered that the toilets are often a place where people go when they are feeling down so we wanted to make this a more positive space. We are also going to put some positive quotes in bright colours on the doors and walls of the toilets.
We were lucky enough to have Mrs Jensen (Psychologist) come and talk to us about how the brain works and some helpful tips on how to regulate our emotions. We then visited the classrooms and talked to the students about the session.

SRC – Prep to Grade 6 Poetry Competition
The SRC are continuing their theme of Mental Health for 2021. We have decided that we are going to create awareness around multiculturalism. Often people from other cultures can be subject to bullying and racism. The SRC believe that if we create awareness and understanding of people from different cultures this could combat bullying and racism.
To create more awareness and understanding the SRC would like to conduct a Poetry Competition in which students can write a poem in the tradition/style of a different culture.
The Prep students will be working collaboratively to create their multicultural poems.
The Grade one students will be exploring some stories, songs and poems from different cultures within their classroom community.
Grade 2 - Grade 6 will be working independently on their poems.
Also, the members of the SRC will be/have been visiting classrooms and sharing stories from different cultures.
The closing date for the poems will be Friday 23 July.

We have many items in lost property, so ask that you clearly label your child's items with their full name, especially jackets. This enables us to return your child's items back to them if they are handed into Lost & Found.
Without a name on the items they all look the same and we are unable to locate the correct owner.
